Gavin Creel and cast of ‘Hair’ get a taste of Hollywood

As you may recall from Gavin Creel’s earlier post, the entire Broadway cast of ‘Hair’ has made its way across the country, landing in L.A. in the wee hours of the evening after a rather wild flight from New York.
After the ‘Hair’ tribe wraps its taping for ‘The Tonight Show’ (tonight on NBC), they’ll dash to the Here Lounge (696 N. Robertson Blvd., West Hollywood) for a special ‘be-in’ event in support of marriage equality. They’ll join gay-rights activist Cleve Jones and Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black at the event from 7 to 8 p.m. before heading back to New York. Then it’s back to their normal routine, with a performance Tuesday night at the Hirshfeld Theatre.
8:36 a.m.
: Wake-up call. Got to bed at 3:15 a.m. How am I functioning? It’s sunny out. Go figure. Shower then down to the bus. Listening to ‘Apes and Androids’ in this massive shower.
9:17 a.m.: In the van heading to Conan. Passing the Hollywood sign now.
9:46 a.m.: OK, we are at Universal Studios here in the holding area. And in the 4 minutes since I’ve been out of the van I have already been yelled at for taking a picture of Will Swenson in front of the ‘Bruno’ poster. Classic.
The hippies are chowing down free food...you would think it was the first meal any of us have had in days. We are also contemplating stealing a golf cart and driving around yelling peace chants.... Well, at least I am.
10:06 a.m.: I just discovered that last night there was a skinny dipping escapade at the rooftop pool, a music video made and most everyone didn’t go to bed until well after I did.
Oh, and Cesar Millan (‘The Dog Whisperer’) is sitting outside the studio having coffee! I wish I brought my dog for some training.
10:38 a.m.: We’ve been called over for dress rehearsal. Naturally I am just now getting my wig on and I will undoubtedly be late. This is entirely my fault. Will is still hear warming up so I don’t feel so bad.
12:17 p.m.: On a bathroom break during dress rehearsal. This is really cool. We are rehearsing through the number and it is looking incredible. The band sounds ridiculous, the cast is (running on fumes) but killing! And our entire crew is the best audience ever.
3:08 p.m.: OK. Been a bit since I posted. Because um... we’ve been lounging by the pool at the Universal Sheraton. Hot tub, laps in the pool, a fruity drink or two. Just perfect weather. Michael Scott had trouble with his deck chair and provided hilarity for all. Kacie Sheik got a visit from her boy and Lauren Elder’s mom popped by.
Now back on the van to do the show. I’m crashing.
